This is ridiculous! With some phones, the only way to customize them sufficiently is with modification outside of the normal operating parameters. The security system is called "eFuse".

"If the eFuse failes to verify this information then the eFuse receives a command to “blow the fuse” or “trip the fuse”. This results in the booting process becoming corrupted and resulting in a permanent bricking of the Phone. This FailSafe is activated anytime the bootloader is tampered with or any of the above three parts of the phone has been tampered with." (source)

Some have even suggested that Motorola, the maker of the new device, be removed from the Open Handset Alliance, stating: "It violates EVERYTHING the Open Handset Alliance stands for."

>>>> I work for University Information Technology Services and on Sundays, I sit in a dorm computer lab for 4 hours. My lab is vacant which is surprising at this point in the semester.

Usually I work on homework or my website but today, I’ve been looking for recipes. Coming to work hungry is usually a bad idea, especially if I torture myself by reading food blogs. After salivating non-stop for about an hour, I decided I needed a change of pace.

Mondays aren’t my worst/longest day of the week but they’re close. Monday is, however, the day before Tuesday, and Tuesdays are terrible. I have class and work from 8am to 10pm with only two short breaks. 3 more weeks to go.

This summer is shaping up anti-climactically. It seems I will end up taking a class or two, working part time somewhere, and have plenty of time to develop myself independently. By that I mean exercising, reading, and developing my technical skill-set.

My first project is to build a server, set it up with Apache and MySQL server, and build a webpage with a database back-end. I will document the design process with pictures and a blog.
SKILLS: PHP or ASP.net, MySQL, and Apache.

My next project is to redesign my webpage. This may actually be the same project as my d-base project; I don’t know if my personal website needs a database backend but if I can think of a way to integrate it, this project and the first project will be the same. Either way, I want to re-design my webpage. When I built it, I didn’t know exactly what I needed content wise so it doesn’t handle everything I need.
SKILLS: CSS, HTML, Photoshop, Flash, and Apache

Next, I will get a book on Java and dive in. I am familiar with Processing, a Java extension, but my Java knowledge is lacking. My new website design will have a portfolio capable to displaying coding in an efficient way – I will post my programs to it.
SKILLS: Java

So far, those are my plans. Take a few classes, work part time, and develop my technical skills on my own.

Tampa, FL - Spring Break 09'

I forgot about these pictures - this was a few weeks ago. According to the NYTimes, it is the largest viral impact in the last 5 years.

The worm is multifaceted and exists in multiple variants. Each variant with slightly different attacks but overall a similar attack. What is so interesting to me about this worm is its mechanism for flooding network traffic - it funnels its network payload of about 5000 domain names through a network on 512 to 1028 bit encryption. The effect is a crippled network and invisible traffic.

The good news: there are several working fixes for the worm. Symantec has a fix for the virus you can find here.

Good night and good luck. heheheh

Trip to Michigan

("WHY IS IT SO COLD!!!") says the random, obviously very cold squirrel.

This is my cat KC. (1) this monitor DOES auto adjust to inputs [there is a setting to make this happen - not setup this way out of the box] (2) HDMI works as it should - the highest res HDMI supports is 1080p. To get the full resolution, you must use VGA. (3) 1920x1200 is AWESOME I cant believe how beautiful games are at this res. (4) the monitors response time is excellent I see no ghosting what-so-ever. (5a) there are two negative things I have to say about it. The speakers do buzz - but muting them fixes it. (5b) the controls on the side suck and it really takes some getting used to. but, if you get it setup right, you don't have to mess with them ever again. I haven't touched them since I set it up originally.

(the bottom line) this monitor is amazing. you will not be disappointed!

UPDATES!!!

I've been practicing Flash and Illustrator. These changes are the result of the information boom – the rise of the computer. Despite the astounding advancements to technology since its inception, it is still in its infancy. The impact of living in this age has not even begun to be understood, especially by the average person. Computers have provided the ability to efficiently collect, organize, and store information. This has resulted in a stockpiling of information on an astounding scale. Every day, information is collected from people with or without their knowledge, by voluntary or involuntary collection methods. The data is sorted, processed, and eventually stored at near-instantaneous speeds. Corporations and governments collect this data and in many cases, sell or share the information with other companies and governments, resulting in enormous collaborative information systems. The data continues to amass, like a snowball down an infinite mountain, continuing to gain size and momentum… and to what end?

Imagine a 22 year old man graduating from college in 2038. After the farewells and celebration, he is in search of a job. On Monday morning he walks into a prestigious accounting firm in his finest suit, with great confidence, his biggest smile, and his resume in hand. He is greeted by the receptionist who he informs of his 9:00am appointment with Jeff Lebowski, the firm’s Executive Vice President. The receptionist gently taps the touch screen in front of her and instructs him to follow the hallway, first door on the left. He is surprised to find not an Executive VP but instead a single workstation, with a simple, yet ominous message on it. “Enter your SSN:” He obediently enters it, and the screen responds with “Processing…” In the next few moments, while his mind ponders this strange computer’s possible functions, a ubiquitous umbrella system of databases is electrified as millions of elements of this person life are fed into a central processing node. The machines sit in the dark, quietly humming as they make millions of calculations per second. In a few seconds, every recorded event of the man’s life is grouped and categorized, resulting in a profile of a man. It does not breathe or have a personality. It cannot defend itself. He receives a message on the screen: “JOHN CONNER – 22 – Accounting B.A. Indiana University …” A full page of information is displayed in front of him; basically the contents of his resume. He is startled as a printer he had not previously noticed kicks on and spits out a single sheet of paper. It begins with, “Mr. Conner, We regret to inform you…” He is escorted out of the building.

What John didn’t know, is that the decision about his employment had just as much to do with an aggregation of smaller, seemingly insignificant details about his life as it did about his resume and its contents. Small facts about his life that he was oblivious to, and events he himself had even forgotten were somehow remembered. How accurate could a profile such as this be? What is artificially or incorrectly added? What is lost?

a Jamaican Thanksgiving

Wagwan. Today, an Apple document describing the installation of AirPort cards in "MacBook/MacBook Pro (Late 2008)" leaked and seems to prove that (1) the MacBook and MacBook Pro are being updated and (2) Apple will continue to use AirPort cards instead of onboard wireless LAN devices. It has also been widely speculated that these new notebooks will contain nVidia graphics processing(link).

I'm excited =D

A little bit about me...

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> My name is Richard but I go by Rob. Its my initials: (R)ichard (O)llen (B)roadwell. I am currently a senior at Indiana University in Bloomington working on a B.S. of Informatics. I work for UITS (University IT Services) as a consultant. I am an avid golfer, movie buff, and cyberathlete (aka. Gamer). I enjoy long walks on the beach and intimate conversation... just kidding. But seriously I do love the beach. I lived in Georgia from birth to 12 years old. My parents had a beach cottage in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and I spent a great deal of my childhood there. In 7th grade I moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Aside from the initial weather shock of my first winter, I loved my new home. I picked up downhill skiing and still go as often as I can. I've been out west a couple of times to Aspen/Snowmass and Breckenridge and it makes the Indiana "mountains" look puny.

My academic passions are Biology, Psychology, Telecommunications, and anything technical. I will graduate with minors in all 3. I develop my portfolio and technical skill set in my spare time. Right now my focus is web-design. My dream job is two-fold: half of my time (25 hrs a week) spent on collaborative consulting for IT projects. The other half I want to nurture a warehouse full of databases; troubleshoot, maintain, upgrade... take care of them.

I will graduate in May 2010 with a B.S. in Informatics, minors in Biology, Psychology, and Telecommunications. I hope to move south - to North Carolina (Wilmington, Chapel Hill), South Carolina, Florida, or California (San Diego, San Fransisco). I'll keep you posted =D

Anyways, thats a little bit about me.
